Tundramatiks, a balkan-influenced rock band signed to indie label Exogenic Music Group, held an album release party last Wednesday in one of Helsinki’s bigger music venues, Tavastia. Their new album is entitled ‘Roinan rodeo’, check out the crisp, wintry video below to sample one of the album tracks:
In contrast to the sombre mood of the above video, the gig was lively and energetic, particularly Mikko the bass player, who I had trouble keeping up with from the other side of the camera. I managed somehow, but I’m convinced had he eaten a can of jumping beans before going on stage. Judging by the enthusiasm of the audience, they’d had some too. I’ll give you another video, this time their latest single, to give a better impression of the pace of the gig. For full effect, imagine it LOUD.
I’d listened to the band before the gig on their website to get an idea of what I was letting myself in for, and found it to be pretty good. The live performance improved on my first impression. What was particularly nice was that the band pulled out all the stops for the grand finale. The number of people on stage tripled from 3 to 9 as dancers and drummers came on rock out, pop champagne bottle full of confetti and get the audience worked up even further. The drummer snuck round the back to perform a trumpet solo. I hope I’m not giving too much away here, because the band have some more tour dates lined up and I’ve no idea what stunts they’re going to pull at each venue. The dates are:
19.04 – Kuopio, Henry’s Pub
20.04 – Jyväskylä, Jyrock
21.04 – Oulu, Nuclear Nightclub
19.05 – Helsinki, Korjaamo
Check them out if you like the videos.
